Detta är en M1-uppsats från Karlstads universitet/Fakulteten för humaniora och samhällsvetenskap (from 2013)

Sammanfattning: The purpose of this study is to examine the popular cultural conceptions and representations of homosexuality. A case study is conducted of the music video "Montero" by the hip-hop artist Lil Nas X. With a Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis we aim to contribute with existing knowledge about the subject and the problems surrounding it. We intend to critically discuss if and how these representations can challenge (and/or reproduce) dominant notions of homosexuality. To fulfill the purpose we have formulated the following questions: 1. “By which semiotic significance elements is the idea of homosexuality represented/constructed?” 2. “How are stereotypes of homosexuality challenged and/or reproduced in the current case study?” The theoretical framework that is used is representation, social semiotics, religious symbolism, hegemony and intersectionality. The study is a qualitative analysis and based on the method MCDA. We have accomplished the study by doing an analysis based on several categories, intertextualization, clothing, body language, color and genre. The analysis is divided into three different thematic discourses, which also has been divided into smaller sections. The result and conclusion of this study is that the hip hop artist is both reproducing andchallenging the stereotypes of homosexuality. By using religious symbolism and intertextualization throughout the video, he is reproducing the idea of homosexuality as a sin. He is also reproducing the stereotypes by wearing feminine clothing and moves with sensitive motions. We understand from previous research that the genre often uses homophobic lyrics, so being gay within it is a way of challenging its stereotypes. In addition, by challenging male hegemony, he breaks stereotypes about homosexuality, as he expresses power in the context of femininity.
