Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Statsvetenskapliga institutionen

Sammanfattning: The aim of this study was to investigate how the democratization of Kosovo has developed and to inquire the influence from the United Nations on Kosovo’s democracy. To achieve my purpose with the study I investigated the standards that the UN had set for Kosovo and the results from Freedom House and Human Rights Watch. I used the theoretical framework that affect peacebuilding and democratization. The result of the study shows that Kosovo has a long way to go before reaching a fully democratic society. Furthermore the results from Freedom House and Human Rights Watch present that there are significant issues in many of the fundamental points for a well functioning democratic society. Corruption is one of the most serious problems for the country because it occurs in almost every institution, and therefore it is a direct threat to democracy. The reached conclusion is that the UN’s influence on Kosovo’s democracy has not been fully successful. The conditions for a well-functioning democratic society in Kosovo were bad and the country was not ready for such an extensive project because the inhabitants never had the chance to adapt to the new-found freedom.
