Sammanfattning: The purpose of this study is to distinguish and understand the challenges of working within Swedens' National Board of Institutional Cares juvenile institutions and how the treatment assistants handle these challenges. Treatment assistants who work at SiS (Statens institutionsstyrelse) juvenile institutions are their shifts locked in with juveniles who have a wide range of norm-breaking behaviour and face challenges such as violence and threats. Some even mention their colleagues as a challenge they continuously deal with. With a qualitative approach, this study presents an analysis of empirical data collected by performing five semi-structured interviews with people who have previously worked in this environment. What the interviews have shown is that the challenges can vary, but there are similarities in a number of answers. The data has been analyzed with theories that touch on the room for action when working as a representative for an organization and the socio-psychological aspects of the meeting between two individuals. The main conclusions are that it isn’t possible to prepare for the workplace theoretically and that violence to some degree occurs due to staff. If staff works prestigiously and treats the juveniles at the institution after their preconceived notions of them, the work towards a functioning relationship will be affected. The relationship between the staff and the juvenile plays a critical role as to how susceptible the juvenile is to the treatment offered at the institution.
