Sammanfattning: Clean drinking water is often taken for granted. However, the lake that supplies the greater part of southwestern Scania with drinking water has severe environmental problems regarding the chemical and ecological status. The organization Fokus Vombsjön has now taken it upon themselves to develop a water management plan for the lake, with the goal to improve its overall status. The aim of this study was to examine how measures to improve water quality are monitored to ensure their efficiency within the Swedish water management. Furthermore, the study investigates how such a monitoring program should be included and conducted in a local water management plan for lake Vombsjön. First a document study was performed to collect relevant data from previous monitoring studies within the catchment area. This was later followed by an interview study to account for local stakeholders’ knowledge, opinions and ideas about the current and future monitoring of measures. The study shows that the work with evaluating and measuring the effects of measures within the Swedish water management needs improving. In a local water management plan for lake Vombsjön it is important to perform long term studies with continuous sampling to measure the effects of implemented restorations. It is also important to account for how the monitoring is going to be funded, even after the project is completed.
