Sammanfattning: A society that is constantly evolving and growing creates great demands on a well-functioning infraction structure. Railway investments as a transport solution for both passenger and goods transport are the basis for a continued positive development in society. When a new railway line plans today, it has based on long-term forecasts based on future needs for passenger and goods transport. Forecasts have proved in some cases misleading and the need for increased capacity is closer than expected.The study reference project is Norrbotniabanan and is studying that in the case of new construction, it will expand the construction’s works to build the railway's BEST (Rail, Electricity, signal and telecommunication) in the future when the need arises. The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has requested the study to be the used as guidelines for future railway projects. Demand for higher capacity has come earlier than expected. Examples of this are the Strängnästunneln and the Ostkustbanan. After 10-15 years have the projects been completed, a parallel track has been built. These projects have investigated in this rapport.In this report, times-, cost and capacity calculation are made and environmental effects have been analyzed for the expansion of construction’s works in the form of railway tunnels and railway bridges. Three cases are studied, namely case1. construction for single track, case 2. construction for double track and case 3. a construction of a parallel single track in the future.Investment calculations have been prepared using the net present value and the final value method. The result is presenting in the form of diagrams showing the percentage increase in construction times and investment costs, as well as a compilation of environmental effects.The result of the report has constituted that it is more profitable to prepare the construction works for greater capacity in new construction compared to an expansion in the future. 29% more in additional investment and 59% longer construction time is required for construction for case 2, 100% more in additional investment and time spent on case 3. According to the investment calculation in this report, it is economically advantageous that additional investment made after 35 years.Keywords:
