    Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the literary representation and construction of mental illness in characters resulting from childhood trauma in the gothic pulp novel Flowers in the Attic (1979) by Cleo Virginia Andrews (1923-1986). Through a close reading of the novel, the analysis will emphasise the narration, interpersonal relationships, and constructed psyche primarily of the main character Cathy Dollanganger. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : The research conducted in this paper will concern the development of the Gothic trope of hauntings in a comparative analysis of two gothic novels, Wuthering Heights (1847) by Emily Brontë and The Haunting of Hill House (1959) by Shirley Jackson. The analysis will focus on how hauntings of various forms are presented and what they represent in the two texts before and after the development of psychoanalytical studies, particularly Sigmund Freud’s conceptualization of “Das Unheimliche”.     Sammanfattning : The aim of this essay is to investigate the meaning and importance of the female friendship within Ellen Moers tradition and theory regarding the female gothic. In this essay, I argue that the female friendship has played an important role in the portrayal of the Gothic fiction as socially critical of women’s position in the society, mainly by examining the two works Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.
