Sammanfattning: The Schengen and Euro crisis has made the subject of European identity a center of the general European debate. There is a consensus that the European Commission has a strong formal institutional as well as a strong informal opportunity to influence and influence the dynamics of European identity. The material in the essay is eight of EU’s annual speeches, State of the European Union. This study is investigating the common history and culture, common values and "us and them". The common history and culture play a major role in building an identity in Europe. There is a general idea that Europe is based on values. It is important for humans to be divided into us and them, it’s a part of our identity. This thesis in an analysis of whether (and if so how) the way in which European identity has changed over time, where crises have occurred, based on different themes in European identity. The results have confirmed previous research. We now know that the Euro and Schengen crisis have affected the way in which the President of the Commission speaks of 'us and them' in his speeches, but also to some extent in the common history and culture.
