Sammanfattning: This thesis focuses on how individual archives are made, what their work is like and how they can emerge from ageneral interest from the public. Uppsala Musical Archive (Uppsala Musikarkiv) is a local, voluntary and individualdriven archive that mainly focuses on music and cultural heritage as archival material. They do not only focusstrictly on music, but also on all objects and documents that have any connection to local artists, music or venues. To see music and it’s connection to culture as archival records is a rather new view in the Swedish field of archivesand thus it is of interest to unveil how archives with this focus function, and why.My research consists of interviews with Uppsala Music Archive, Uppsala City Archive (Uppsala Stadsarkiv)and The Uppsala Popular Movement Archive (Folkrörelsearkivet i Uppsala) as well as mail conversations withtwo larger archives, The Swedish Rock Archive (Svenskt Rockarkiv) and The Swedish Folk Song Archive(Svenskt Visarkiv). All these archives have in common that they focus on music and culture with the differencethat The Swedish Rock Archive and The Swedish Folk Song Archive is state founded. With Uppsala Musical Archive as a starting point, I use Grounded Theory and archival concepts, Total-,Participatory- and Community Archives as well as Terry Cooks theory of the four archival paradigms, to showhow an individual archive, with it’s focus on music and culture, works and what drives it forward.Furthermore, there is yet a thesis to be written about Uppsala Musical Archive, so this is my contributiontowards bringing forward it’s story and value for the Swedish cultural heritage.
