Traduire la mémoire : La mémoire du Chambon-sur-Lignon entre 'foreignization' & 'domestication'

Detta är en Magister-uppsats från Linnéuniversitetet/Institutionen för språk (SPR)

Sammanfattning: This paper examines how to translate the historical memory of Chambon-sur-Lignon in France, by analyzing the translation procedures used to transfer proper nouns (personal names, place names, names of organizations) and cultural references (historical, theological) from French to Swedish, on a scale between the strategies foreignization and domestication. The analysis is based on our own translation of three source texts from the book La Montagne refuge. Accueil et sauvetage des juifs autour du Chambon-sur-Lignon, published in 2013 and edited by the scientists in charge of the memorial at Chambon-sur-Lignon. The source texts deal with - and relate - the memory of persecution of the French Huguenots to the persecution and saving of Jews during World War Two. The texts include testimonies from the documentary Weapons of the Spirit. Apart from theoretical notions from the field of translation, this paper takes into account notions on historical memory, and the relationship between memory and translation in this specific study. The analysis of proper nouns is mainly quantitative, whereas the analysis of cultural references is qualitative. The analysis shows that most proper nouns are translated using the strategy foreignization. The historical and theological references are often intersected, and need a combination of foreignization and domestication to produce a target text that reads naturally while respecting both the source text and the historical memory that it treats. One concern has been when and what to translate using explicitation, and why. Another concern has been how to translate historical quotes and testimonies without simplifying a complex history.
