Att försvara sitt ursprung - en musikalisk resa i Transsylvanien

Sammanfattning: Title: Defending one's origin ? a musical journey to Transylvania. A journey to the Transylvanian part of Romania was pursued with the intent to investigate the cultural aspects of the historically and politically rooted set of relations between the Hungarian peaking minority and the majority of the population, the Romanian speaking group. Music pedagogical ambitions within the two cultures were used as reflections of these phenomena. In trying to shed light on my questions and extract the relations between the dominating and the dominated in this specific cultural and social context I have used the central themes of Bourdieu ? capital, habitus and field. My method has been qualitative, based on participation and observation of the field surrounding the Hungarian folk music of Transylvania. Attending classes and practising music in the music camp, diary notes covering impressions, meetings and experiences during the week in Transylvania have been the primary way of data collection. I have also conducted two semi-structured interviews with two of the teachers of the camp. Major conclusions includes: Those in power in Romania contribute to the structure of the field, as defined by Bourdieu, by making laws functioning as major positions within the field. By means of these laws they also define the possibilities of the Romanian people to come in contact with other fields. The Hungarian minority of Romania is circumscribed in its struggle for social capital. The social capital represents resources based on family relations, personal and group related contacts.
