Sammanfattning: Heritage language has been an actively studied topic. Recent research has helped us to understand that the quality and quantity of the linguistic flow are factors that have an impact on the development of the language (Valdés 1995, 2014). However, studies that indicate what extramural contact of the language is like and what kind of strategies parents practice to stimulate the acquisition of the heritage language at home are still questions to be explored. In order to provide information relevant to this area of research, this exploratory study is based on six semi-structured interviews with Spanish-speaking participants residing in Sweden and whose children attend mother tongue classes. Through the qualitative method, it is possible to identify extracts relevant to the topics covered in the theoretical framework section. In this way, 50 codes organized into categories and themes that provide a vision from a parental perspective are created. Our findings indicate that the characteristics of the different generations of heritage speakers are consistent with those already described in previous studies. We also found that despite parental efforts to preserve and develop their children's heritage language, Swedish manages to show signs of dominance. In turn, the ideologies of the parents affect the acquisition of the language of their children, as well as the transmission of cultural elements. Finally, the study shows that parents consider the mother tongue subject as a tool that helps to strengthen the formal aspects of the language, although they also identify some disadvantages that hinder learning.
