Sammanfattning: With a growing awareness of the environmental impacts associated with the disposal of healthcare plastic consumables through conventional end-of-life methods, such as landfilling and incineration, there is an increasing need to adopt more sustainable practices. This thesis explores the development of an alternative, circular economy-based solution to manage plastic waste generated by the healthcare sector, focusing on the identification of circular end-of-life strategies. The proposed solution entails the design and implementation of a closed-loop system, where end-of-life plastic medical consumables are transformed into value-added products through a process of upgrading healthcare plastic waste into feedstock for downstream recycling processes. This approach involves chemical recycling, converting the waste into valuable petrochemicals and renewable energy sources. By adopting this circular approach, the healthcare industry can transition towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible model of waste management. The thesis presents a comprehensive business case and outlines an implementation strategy for the commercial deployment of a pilot project. Collaboration with technology providers, licensers, logistics service providers, and hospitals is emphasized to ensure the successful implementation of the circular solution. Additionally, the study explores state-of-the-art onsite conversion technologies and identifies end-of-life processes that comply with regulations to ensure safe and compliant waste management within the healthcare sector. The research sheds light on the latest advancements in plastic recycling technologies and their potential applications in the context of healthcare plastic waste. Overall, this thesis provides valuable insights into the adoption of circular economy principles to address the pressing issue of healthcare plastic waste management. By presenting a viable business model and implementation roadmap, it offers a promising path towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future for the healthcare industry.
