Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Statsvetenskapliga institutionen

Sammanfattning: Analyzing an American president is always interesting, especially if they have the tendencies of a Madman. The concept of being a “madman” while in office is not a new one, even Machiavelli said that: ”…at times it is a very wise thing to simulate madness.” This is all part of tactics and of different theoretical approaches to leadership. The American political structure allows for its leader to make personal important foreign policy decisions, and that’s why it’s important to understand why they make these decisions. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and compare the American presidents Richard Nixon and Donald Trump in relation to the political science theories: Madman-theory, Coercive bargaining, and Compellence & Deterrence. After these analyses have been done, they will be compared to each other to see if they had similar styles of leadership and how this is shown in relation to the theories.
