Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Stockholms universitet/JMK

Sammanfattning: Abstract English title: Vinyl Records in Wonderland Degree Project Undergraduate level, 15 university credits. Author: Gabriella Kern Advisor: Jörgen Skågeby   The purpose of this thesis is to try to get closer to an understanding of how DJ:s who are active within techno club culture and in particular within the underground scene experience and use the vinyl record. The questions formulated in this thesis concern both interactions with the vinyl record as well as the eventuality to view it as a socio-material object used to create an identity. The theories that form the framework in which the research questions are answered in this thesis are mostly based on the work of two scientists: Russel Belk (1988) and his article about the extended self and Pierre Bourdieu, whose theories concerning capital, distinction and field has been of great use to understand how individuals act and behave within social rooms and scenes, and how different values are created. Others scientist whose earlier research work has contributed creating a framework for this study are, among many, Dominik Bartmanski and Ian Woodward (2015) and Sarah Thornton (1995). The method implemented in this study is the qualitative research interview. Results from the interviews shows that DJ:s within the underground scene use the vinyl record partly as a material necessity to be able to perform an entertaining practise. To DJ with physical records offers great interaction. It can also be seen as a tool with a great deal of functions beyond the technical ones. The vinyl record has come to reach high status among techno enthusiasts and DJ:s within the underground club scene and it owes that position to its historical context and its material qualities, which makes the user experience a feeling of authenticity. It’s in many ways an important consumption symbol for the identity, both the group identity as well as the individual one.   Key words: underground scene, techno culture, analogue media, vinyl, DJ, identity
