Sammanfattning: In this report a method has been developed that aims to support identification of the need for verification through performance-based design of fire safety for different buildings, i.e. when prescriptive design is not applicable. The method is based on the idea that elements or areas of fire safety that presents specific challenges and problems for the building are those in need of verification through performance-based design. Problem areas have been identified through a literature study and a study of fires that has resulted in major consequences. The identified problem areas have been assembled in a matrix. With the matrix it is possible to plot which technical features that are associated with the problem area, such as fire compartmentation. By clarifying the technical features associated with the problem areas, guidance is given on the need for verification. The technical features in need of verification are those that are affected by the identified problem areas, such as evacuation of high rise buildings, and what needs to be verified is that the identified problems are handled in a safe manner.
