Sammanfattning: A qualitative exploratory case study is presented to provide an understanding of Värkstaden, a self-help initiative for people with chronic pain. Two semi-structured interviews and an observation was conducted, both with participants of the group. Analysis of this data together with critical text analysis sought to answer the question: How is "empowerment" experienced from a user perspective? With a critical heath psychological scope, the case study suggests that: a) Living with chronic pain can be understood as being marginalized from significant community practices. b) The most important function of Värkstaden is to provide a social network and space for development of reorienting self-narratives. c) Värkstaden itself may also be at risk of marginalizing individuals through specific semi-articulated requirements for its participants.
