  1. 1. Vibrational signals as indicators of soil fauna health? : A novel approach to environmental monitoring of ants

    Master-uppsats, Umeå universitet/Institutionen för ekologi, miljö och geovetenskap

    Författare :Joel Fransson Forsberg; [2023]
    Nyckelord :Vibrations; Formica ants; Vibrometer; Vibrational signals; Imidacloprid; Before-After-Control-Impact;

    Sammanfattning : Soil fauna provides processes of crucial importance for ecosystem functions, but our ability to observe their actions often depend on destructive methods where the integrity of the studied environment (the soil) is compromised. In this study, I develop and test a new generation of environmental monitoring tools that utilize vibrations made by soil macrofauna to inform about their performance and health. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Towards climate optimised riparian buffer zones in boreal forests

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Forest Ecology and Management

    Författare :Alice Falk; [2022]
    Nyckelord :Forestry; Biogeochemical hotspots; Carbon dioxide; Methane;

    Sammanfattning : Boreal forests have the potential to mitigate the increased concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. However, forestry alters the soil biogeochemical processes which can cause an increase in GHG emissions from nearby water bodies, soil and vegetation. LÄS MER

  3. 3. As I live and breathe! : The effects of hypolimnic oxygenation on benthic macroinvertebrate and zooplankton assemblages

    Master-uppsats, Umeå universitet/Institutionen för ekologi, miljö och geovetenskap

    Författare :Rashid Kadhim; [2022]
    Nyckelord :lake hypoxia; benthic macroinvertebrates; chironomids; zooplankton;

    Sammanfattning : Exacerbated deep-water hypoxia, brought about by anthropogenic-derived dissolved organic carbon (DOC) input, has potentially detrimental impacts on organisms residing in freshwater ecosystems. Oxygenation of the water column is a potential management strategy to mitigate this impact, and used to alleviate DOC induced oxygen depletion. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Assessing the impact of post-fire restoration interventions using spectral vegetation indices: A case study in El Bruc, Spain

    Master-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Författare :Bernat Dorado Guerrero; [2022]
    Nyckelord :geography; GIS; restoration intervention; drylands; monitoring; BACI; spectral vegetation indices; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Sammanfattning : Ecological restoration has become an increasingly used practice to revert degraded land and mitigate the effects of extreme events in vulnerable biomes such as drylands. Methods to improve the assessment of these restoration interventions are essential to ensure their success, optimize resources and identify improvement aspects for future interventions. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Post-fire community changes in peatland dwelling beetles : A before-after-control impact study of beetle communities in Swedish mires after a megafire

    Master-uppsats, Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för biologisk grundutbildning

    Författare :Janina Happ; [2021]
    Nyckelord :Coleoptera; Mires; Peatlands; Wildfire; Forestfire; Megafire;

    Sammanfattning : As a consequence to climate change and resulting severe weather events such as prolonged hot and dry periods, wildfire frequency increases globally. Progressively, these effects are noticeable in high latitude countries such as Sweden where a megafire burned 13 100 ha of managed coniferous forest in 2014. LÄS MER
