Sammanfattning: Title: Harmonic development in melodic solo lines in jazz improvisation - Analyses of seven solos on jazz guitar This paper seeks answers to the question: How can you get a clear sense of harmony and a clear harmonic course in melodic solo lines? The study is based on quantitative and qualita-tive analysis of transcriptions of seven jazz solos played by the guitarists John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Jesse Van Ruller. In the theoretical background, I make a summary of jazz-harmony, jazz-theory and different approaches and concepts of jazz improvisation. The theoretical background defines the terminology that I use in my analysis of the solos and in my discussion of the results and what con-clusions I draw from them. The results show how the guitarists in this study use different concepts to highlight key chord- or color-tones, either in the underlying harmony played by the comp-section, or in a superimposed harmony that the soloist are "thinking" over the chord progression played by the comp-section. Finale I describe what conclusions I draw from the results of my analysis and discuss how these results relate to the theory and previous research I reported on in the theory chapter. I also present some pedagogical implications of the results.
