EU i kroatiska tidningar före och efter medlemskapet 2013

Sammanfattning: The aim of this thesis was to investigate how two daily newspapers in Croatia have presented EU and the Croatian membership before and after the country’s entry (2009-2017) and to see if and in that case how the depictions have changed. Thus, the three questions that the analysis is circulating around concern the possibilities and problems the newspapers framed regarding EU and the Croatian membership before the entry, after the entry, and eventual differences between the periods. This has been made through a discourse analysis, which has been used to analyze how the newspapers are creating frames in their depictions, whereby the Framing theory has been used. The results shows that possibilities about EU mostly concerns the organization’s way to prevent or solve crisis; before Croatia’s entry the euro-crisis, afterwards the migration crisis. Problems about EU is before focusing on the way the organization as a whole is vulnerable when difficulties occur in some part of the Union, while afterwards pointing out the internal threats as crucial. Before Croatia entry the EU, the possibilities related to better life opportunities, stronger economy for individuals and the country, and better political circumstances regarding peace and stability for the nearby region. This is also how the frame generally looks in the latter period. Regarding the problems, are they in the first period concerning skepticism among the Croats and demographical worries, while afterwards focusing on the missed economic development.
