Sammanfattning: Bookstart is a reading promotion programme for small children aged 0-3. In this thesis we have examined how librarians work with this programme in Landskrona. The librarians are reaching out to preschools, open preschools and child health care centers to develop a long-term programme in collaboration with these institutions. The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to a better understanding of collaboration between different professions around reading promotion in the form of Bokstart. To do this we have interviewed librarians, preschool teachers and nurses with the same professional objective, which is reading promotion aimed at small children. When working with small children one has to engage the entire family, which is incorporated in the term Family literacy. Previous research indicates that family literacy programmes are effective in developing children's literacy and has long term effects for childhood literacy development. We have used new institutional theory and culture geography in our analysis. This theory provides the tools necessary to analyse how professionals deal with their organisations and the surrounding world in order to legitimize the programs that they implement. The librarians have made up a new word; to “bookstartify” (bokstartifiera) a conversation. This is when the conversation with a family goes beyond the classic reference interview and book tips to include for example practical examples of how to read with your small children and talk about the benefits of this. We think that the term boookstartify is useful in a wider perspective to formalize the concept of Bokstart. The responsibility of working with family literacy programmes fall somewhere between school, health care, and the library. Therefore collaboration between these institutions is vital. In order to ensure a long term impact on children's literacy formal policy is required to ensure such programs are implemented.
