Sammanfattning: Due to the human population, urbanization and the standard of living is increasing, the municipal solid waste is increasing in the same pace. While the society overall is getting more environmentally conscious and getting a better insight in the consequences of not managing the waste that is produced in a better way than dumping it on deposits, problems arise and especially in larger cities. Big parts of Europe are also influenced by the European Union’s strategy that put additional press on the companies that are active within the business. Our purpose is to survey the waste management business and since it is such a large business we have chosen to focus on the municipal solid waste, and as representation for Europe we have looked at the countries France and Germany that should give a good general picture of what it looks like. By further concentrating us on the largest actors for management of the waste in respective country, that is most likely to handle the most amount of waste, the task gets a lot more hands-on. On the basis of Michael Porters five forces model, interviews with people who are deeply informed with the business have described the business’ inner structure. To describe the external factors that affect the business the PESTEL-framework has been used as a template, and deeply informed people have also been the source of the data that is presented were and the basis of conclusions. As the study has been carried out it has appeared that since the European Union constantly is putting up new restrictions, and the environmental consciousness is growing in the worldwide population, the way to manage the waste is altering. There are a lot of external powers that are affecting the business, not only the European Union but also the individual country governments’ organizations. The actors that are active within in the business are experiencing hard competition in forms of other actors but also from the continuous change of laws and guidelines. Million of tons of waste is managed daily and the amounts are constantly increasing The management of these amounts are, in an increasing pace, moving towards reusable, recycle or alternative transport to facilities that can extract energy through composting and incineration of the waste.
