Sammanfattning: My bachelor thesis project is about making Swedish pine better appealing to the Swedish furniture market by altering the pines visual appearance using different sawing techniques.In this report I take a closer look at pine as a traditional furniture making material andspecifically focus on the “pine wave” period during the 1970’s.I also look at how Swedish pine is used today within furniture manufacturing and architecture.To get a better understanding of what people think about pine, I sent out a survey throughsocial media where 81 people ranked a selection of images showing the results from thedifferent sawing techniques I personally tested. Based on the online survey, the results showedthat modified pine, eaven with a large amount of knots, proved to be nearly as appealing as thepine without any knots. Later in my project, I developed a piece of furniture partially based onthe results of the online survey but also based on an element of storytelling to try to change thenegative perception associated with pine.In conclusion, I find that pine has to be carefully redesigned by visually changing thesurface by limiting certain parts of the furniture in order for the pine to visually not be “toooverwhelming”.
