Sammanfattning: In this study, Bertil Vallien's altar cabinet "Fiat Lux" in Växjö Cathedral is compared with Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin's altarpiece "Paradise" in St. Paul's church in Malmö. My initial questions of research were When, Where, How, Why and In what way these two altar works are designed. These questions were answered based on written material about the altar cabinet in Växjö Cathedral and the altarpiece in St. Petri church, as well as visits on-site where I studied the artworks in detail. In addition, I have also taken part in books and articles on Bertil Vallien's glass art and Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin's photo art. Furthermore, I have had written and verbal contact with Bertil Vallien and Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin, whose comments also contributed to an increased understanding. Using the three methods; Erwin Panofsky's iconology, Roland Barthes's punctum concept and Wolfgang Kemp's focalization concept, the study reached the purpose of an increasing understanding of the artistic design. This study has shown that a specialized professional language in which the semiotic division of studium and punctum has been useful and together with iconological analysis and reception theory's focalization concept, they complement each other. The study illustrates that similarities but also differences exist between the understanding based on the three methods. However, this increases the understanding of the two works of art: the altar cabinet and the altarpiece.
