Sammanfattning: For a long time there has been discussion in Sweden about the reasons why people become criminals, especially in adolescence. The purpose of this essay is to use Travis Hirschi´s control theory social bonds, to see if a weakened social bond increases the risk of a youth committing criminal acts. A criminal act is counted as such based on the Swedish law book. Previous research on social ties shows that hanging out with unconventional friends is one of the biggest risks of committing crime yourself, where alcohol and drugs are also involved. Protective factors in the form of family, friends, school, society's structure and norms can convert into risk factors. As long as there is a buffer of them as protective factors, the risk of criminal behavior and criminal acts taking place is reduced. This study is based on qualitative semi structured interviews with six people who committed criminal acts during their youth. The results show that several of the social bonds were weak among the participants. The results also show other contributing risk factors that are increasing the risk of committing crimes that are not included in the control theory social bonds, namely mental illness and drugs or alcohol addiction.
