Sammanfattning: Aim The aim of this study was to find out whether Motivational Interviewing can affect people to change their behaviour in form of increasing physical activity. What results do studies conducted at healthy adults using Motivational Interviewing with physical activity as an outcome present? Method To fulfil the aim of the study we chose a review process. During the research two data-bases were used, PUBMED and CSA. Studies including participants under the age of 18 or studies where the participants suffered from diseases were excluded. Studies in parity with our inclusion criteria´s have been examined and compiled. In total, eight studies were selected for analysing. The eight studies used Motivational Interviewing at least as a part of the inter-vention. The number of participants in the studies varied from 20 to 1400. The length of the interventions varied from 8 to 52 weeks. Results There were no evident differences in the studies comparing Motivational Interviewing and other intervention methods. Five studies demonstrated an increase of physical activity, being compared to initial values or to a control group, as a result of Motivational Interviewing combined with other methods. One study showed no evident changes and the remaining two studies lacked sufficient information to give the possibility to draw any conclusions. Conclusions The studies show that the counsellor’s background may be of importance concerning Motivational Interviewing. The examined studies show that motivational interviewing conducted by a counsellor who has a background in behavioural change, contributes to an increase in physical activity. To summarize, Motivational Interviewing, combined with other methods, can contribute to an increase of physical activity in healthy adults in a short-term perspective. There is a need for more studies to investigate specifically how Motivational Interviewing can increase the level of physical activity.
