Sammanfattning: The thesis in product development – mechanical design includes 15 credits and was carried out during the spring of 2014 at Semcon in Eskilstuna. The task is to construct a special machine for positioning and orientation of a key blank found in six different shapes, the construction is a part of a larger machine for encoding the key blank where a pick- and-place device or robot pick up the key blank and deliver it further in the process. The entire construction is designed for ASSA OEM Gothenburg. In order to accomplish the project the first step was to analyze the existing solutions to similar problems on the market in a current situation analysis to create an understanding of the problem. This was followed by a flow analysis and a functional analysis to get a deeper understanding of the problem and structuring the machine's process flow and its features. The author then came to the conclusion that four stations are required for the process which then six different concepts that could solve the problem were constructed from. The various concepts were based in three different techniques to orient the key blanks and if the key blanks should be stored in the same or separate containers. The concepts were evaluated and after a discussion with the company mentor, two concepts were elected. The two concepts were both founded in the same solution for the orientation of the key blanks and the only difference was if the key blanks should be stored in the same or separate containers. After construction on the system- and detail-level, one of the concepts had no good solution to a form on the inner drum that could reliable handle all the different key blanks and was eliminated from the design process. The project continued with strength calculations and FEM-simulations on detail-level design to verify the constructions strength and dimension of the construction elements. The FMEA-analysis were done alongside that potential errors could be constructed away or the risks could be minimized during the construction phase. Also some DFX-tools where used alongside during the design phase to construct the machine to be easy to maintain, repair and to be reliable. The project resulted in a design consisting of three modules which are easily assembled and can be adapted depending if pick -and-place device or robot is selected. Six sets of each module should be produced, where each set sorts and orients one type of key blank. The frame does not need to be made of six, because it's a two-piece frame that extends across all modules allowing for the separation of the module set. The inner drum and the groove need ​​only one of each because they are all adapted specifically for one type of key blank which allows a cheap and easy update of the equipment if the key blanks are redesigned.
