Sammanfattning: Title: Virtual work environment and its impact on employee motivation and performance. Keywords: virtual workplace, motivation, performance, covid-19 Research question: How is employees' motivation and performance affected in a virtual work environment? Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how the individual's motivation and performance are affected by a virtual work environment during the current covid-19 pandemic from an employee perspective. Method: Case study methodology with semi-structured interviews with respondents from five different organizations and a systematic literature study (SLR). Conclusion: It is suggested that the virtual work environment entails an increased workload, which entails a negative impact on the employee’s motivation and performance. Furthermore, it is suggested that a combination of physical and virtual work environment is essential to achieve increased motivation and performance among the employees. Finally, it is suggested that a combination of both monetary and non-monetary rewards is considered essential to achieve increased motivation and performance among the employees.
