1. Behavioural responses of mice to predator odour components
Master-uppsats, Linköpings universitet/Biologi; Linköpings universitet/Tekniska fakultetenSammanfattning : Having means to detect and avoid potential predators is a necessity for prey species. Most mammalian prey species are able to detect odours emitted by predators and to adapt their behaviour accordingly. These odour cues are therefore considered to act as semiochemicals. Predator odours consist of several dozen different odourants. LÄS MER
2. Behavioural responses in mice exposed to predator odour components
Kandidat-uppsats, Linköpings universitet/Institutionen för fysik, kemi och biologi; Linköpings universitet/Tekniska högskolanSammanfattning : It is essential for prey species to be able to detect predators to avoid them. The sense of smell is used by a number of prey species for this purpose. The aim of the present study was to assess if one of the odourants that make up a predator odour is sufficient to induce a behavioural response in mice (Mus musculus). LÄS MER
3. Olfactory sensitivity of human subjects for six predator odorants
Master-uppsats, Institutionen för fysik, kemi och biologi; Tekniska högskolanSammanfattning : The purpose of the present study was to determine olfactory detection thresholds in human subjects for a set of six sulfur-containing odorants which are known to be components of mammalian predator odors. Using a threealternative ascending staircase procedure, the olfactory sensitivity of 12 healthy adult human subjects, 6 males and 6 females was assessed with 2-propylthietane, 2,2-dimethylthietane, 3-mercapto-3-methylbutan-1-ol, 3-mercapto-3- methylbutyl formate, 3-methyl-1-butanethiol, and methyl-2-phenylethyl sulfide. 4. Odor sensitivity in CD-1 mice for "green" odors
Master-uppsats, Molekylär genetikSammanfattning : ―Green‖ odors comprise a group of eight structurally related aliphatic alkenals and alkenols which are characteristic for the odor of a wide variety of plant materials. Using an automated olfactometer, the olfactory detection thresholds for ―green‖ odors were determined in six CD-1 mice and compared with that of spider monkeys and human subjects. LÄS MER
5. Olfactory detectability of amino acids in the European honeybee (Apis mellifera)
Master-uppsats, Institutionen för fysik, kemi och biologiSammanfattning : The honeybee is one of the model species in insect olfaction and its sense of smell is well studied. However, knowledge about the spectrum of odorants detectable to honeybees is limited. One class of odorants that has never been tested so far are the amino acids, which are important constituents of floral nectar. LÄS MER
