    Sammanfattning : The core question in this master thesis is: What happens to the essence of an object when it becomes out of date and is no longer in use? I am addressing the sense of dignity in once meticulously designed technical/mechanical items that now has become obsolete.     Sammanfattning : In this paper I am studying the orchestral work Lontano (1967) by György Ligeti (1923-2006) and its use in the films The Shining (1980), by Stanley Kubrick, and Shutter Island (2010), by Martin Scorsese. The purpose has been to apply an unusual perspective on film music, based on one selected musical work and how it is used in moving images, instead of the more common method where the entire soundtrack of one specific movie is studied.
