Sammanfattning: This literature review focuses on the question if asset-based policing has any effect in criminal activity. Policing focusing on cash seizure and asset-based investigations is a part of fighting the severe and organized criminal activity. Studies show that the effect of seizured assets could have a higher effect on the criminals then the conviction itself. Getting out of jail and not being able to enjoy the money or assets hits harder than the conviction. A criminal lifestyle includes the risk of getting convicted and sent to jail, getting money or assets seizured is not a part of that calculation. There are in some cases a reducing or preventing effect on criminal activity regarding the part when the police seize money and other assets. On the other hand, it can also increase the criminal activity, the criminal might need to commit more crimes to cover up for the loss of money or assets to the police. The Swedish Police started to focus more and more on seizure money and asset-based investigations, this study describes a part of that work, the opportunities and challenges. The goal with that work is to make it harder for the criminals to continue their lifestyle. Crime shouldn’t pay. Success in work with asset- based investigations also requires a close connection and cooperation between the different Swedish law enforcement authorities.
