Sammanfattning: In order to evaluate and develop the value-creating processesof a company the need to measure the company's performance is evident. To do so, it is necessary to translate the company output into quantitative measures. The challenge with these metrics is how to link them to the company's strategy and how they should be implemented to allow real-time management of the value-creating processes. These metrics should facilitate understanding in the company for all interested parties, employees, stakeholders and customers. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to investigate the role of quality metrics and key indicators in manufacturing organisations, how they are implemented in the organisation and the methodology for developing and using these metrics. The study examines two case studies conducted in organisations in North America and presents how they incorporate metrics in their operations. A manager of the Operations department of a modern Swedish manufacturing company was also interviewed to provide a link to the Swedish industry. The result of this study show that the implementaion of metrics in an organisation that has not worked with measurements before show a significant increase in the organisations output. The study also shows that the market targeted by the manufacturing company does not affect the metrics used in the evaluating process of the company's manufacturing process. The metrics are generally universal regardless of what the company manufactures. The most common metrics adressed are the cycle time of a machine, lead time of a production line, the amount of defects in output and the amount of work in process.
