Modelling the onshore wind energy in thirty European countries

Sammanfattning: This thesis studies the modeling of onshore wind energy in thirty European countries. This study extends the representation of onshore wind energy in the Open Source Energy Model Base for the European Union (OSeMBE). OSeMBE is a model built in the Open Source Energy Modeling System (OSeMOSYS). Its target is to identify the solution with the lowest net present value during the modeling period for the power systems of 30 European countries. The original OSeMBE model is unable to distinguish onshore wind by resource quality, which results in an underestimation of onshore wind energy development. To improve the expression of OSeMBE for onshore wind power, this report proposes a method to segment onshore wind resources according to quality. In addition, considering with the current European demands for the development of renewable energy, another more ambitious scenario is put up. The onshore wind power generation in different scenarios is compared, and the results demonstrate that in the scenario where technologies are divided according to onshore wind resources, onshore wind energy is more extensively developed. In 2050, in the original model, onshore wind energy accounts for 28.8% of total electricity generation, and this figure is 53.2% in the scenario where onshore wind resources were divided. The development of onshore wind power will have a positive impact on achieving climate neutrality in Europe by 2050. However, the results of this research deserve further examination, because the challenges of wind power generation to grid stability are ignored in the model. Moreover, due to the rough time resolution of OSeMOSYS, this limits the more accurate expression of onshore wind growth. Based on this study, the representation of offshore wind and solar energy in the OSeMBE model can be expanded in the same way.
