Sammanfattning: The purpose of this study was to analyze the current discourse in Swedish press regarding how men and women with eating disorders are produced. The question formulations that we have used to answer our purpose were as follows: - How are eating disorder constructed in the selected articles? - How are men and women with eating disorders constructed in the selected articles? To find empirical data, which we consider relevant to our study, we used a targeted selection. We have analyzed twelve articles from different Swedish newspapers, these have been Aftonbladet, Expressen, Metro, Dagens Nyheter and Helsingborgs Dagblad. All of the articles that we selected were published between the years of 2010 and 2016. To find articles about eating disorders, we searched on the newspapers' web pages, using keywords such as “women with eating disorder” and “males with eating disorder”. The method that we used in this paper was a qualitative discourse analysis. This method gave us a close reading of the newspaper articles and an opportunity to examine the specific discourse regarding eating disorders. The theories that we used to analyze our articles were social constructivism, discourse theory, gender and power. To encode our empirical data, we used Håkan Jönson’s analysis model. The result of this study shows that eating disorders is described in the newspapers as a disease that will only affect women. It’s called a “woman's disease”. And that several men experienced a sense of fear to talk about their illness because they are ashamed. The newspapers are also producing eating disorders as a result of the ideal of beauty in society, but it’s also written much about weight, healthy eating and having a perfect body. Some of them are even blaming the celebrities and the supermodels for the increase of the disease.
