Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Högskolan i Halmstad/Akademin för hälsa och välfärd

Sammanfattning: Abstract Background: Ileostomy is done through a surgical procedure, where part of the small intestine is opened and passed through the abdominal wall to create an opening. Patients with an ileostomy can experience complications and problems that affect their lives, regardless of whether the ileostomy is temporary or permanent. The nurse must teach the patient to understand how the ostomy bag is cleaned and what material aids could be added. It is important that the nurse gives the patient dietary recommendations that are suitable, to avoid troublesome conditions such as constipation, diarrhea or a bloated stomach. Through her nursing responsibility, the nurse must help the patient to continue their social participation and daily activities. Aim: The purpose was to shed light on patients' experiences of an ileostomy. Method: The study was conducted as a general literature study with an inductive approach and included eight scientific articles. Results: The results revealed three categories that made up patients' experiences of living with an ileostomy; Experiences of altered physical well-being, Experiences of altered psychological well-being and Experiences of altered social well-being. Conclusion: The patients felt that the ileostomy had affected their lives, both physically and psychologically as well as socially. The ileostomy caused changes in the patients' bodies and appearance, which led to a negative view of the ileostomy itself. Through her nursing responsibility, the nurse must help the patient to continue their social participation and daily activities.
