Sammanfattning: Middle school seems to be one, more or less, forgotten stage in previous research, so I chose to focus my research on this stage. The purpose of this study is to gain an insight into the teachers choice and use of teaching materials in history teaching. One of my questions of interest was whether middle school teachers choose and use the same types of teaching materials as the subject teachers in high school and senior high school. The study is based on interviews with four teachers. The study was conducted according to the method of presentation, a method that allows the respondent to tell his story without preparation. In addition to the personal interviews, the material also contains answers from a student survey. I conducted the survey in the student group of each interviewed teacher. The answers of the surveys have been sorted by student groups to enable a comparison between the teachers intention and the students experience of teaching materials and its use in the history teaching. The results of the study shows that middle school teachers in history seems not to be particularly controlled by the textbook. Instead they generally have a broad repertoire of teaching materials that they use in many different ways. The textbook seems primarily used as a support in the teachers planning and the lessons are more devoted towards history in form of reading fiction, digital resources and study visits. Something that I’ve notised in the study is that middle school teachers seem to work quite differently compared to the subject teachers in high school and senior high school, and the focus of teaching is not as much on knowledge of facts as it is on experiencing history in different ways.
