Sammanfattning: In Sweden there is a public debate regarding bicycle traffic and infrastructure. Severalmunicipalities have set goals to increase the share of bicycle traffic, while car traffic continuesto increase. The street space is continuously introduced to new challenges due to technologicaldevelopment, which comes with applications for food deliveries on mopeds and accessiblee-scooters.The objective of this report is to analyse the design of intersections where bicycle accidentsoccur. The results together with the literature study make up a base for the discussion abouthow the design can increase the traffic safety for bicyclists in intersections. As the workproceeded the demand for widening the perspective increased. There was a need to regardintersections as a node in a network rather than as isolated nodes in a infrastructure system. The discussion regards the connection between traffic safety for bicyclists and the networkperspective. The report is based on a literature study and telephone interviews with two traffic planners.Quantitative accident data from several data bases was analysed to identify intersections wheretraffic accidents with bicycles occurred. The intersections were located across Sweden and theirdesign was analysed from satellite and street view photos. It is difficult to correlate a certain design of an intersection with the occurrence of bicycleaccidents due to the various amount of intersection design. Security at railway intersectionsdiffer geographically but are relatively rid from number of accidents. Single accidents attramway intersections occur more often when the crossing angle is less than 60 degrees andseparated from the road network, which leads to the conclusion that these types of accidentsneed more research, as tram traffic infrastructure is developing in Sweden. The municipalities’ investments in bicycle infrastructure have been confronted by organizedopposition from local citizens and from different traffic categories, which have led to politicalconflicts before, during and after the planning process. Experience show that social mediaplatforms and applications can be helpful for the traffic planers but also be a ground fordisapproval to escalate and be organized. The discussion regarding intersections as connections in a larger infrastructure system leads toconclusions about the participation of local politicians, traffic planners and the Government inthe work to increase the availability and traffic safety for bicycle traffic, in different types ofintersections. Proposed topics for further discussion are:- To widen the assignment of Swedish Transportation Agency to also include and increasethe bicycle traffic’s relevance in the transport network.- To consider the several definitions that exist today: bicycle path; bicycle way; bicyclestreet; bicycle passage; and bicycle overpass; with the purpose to contemplate if there isa more uniform definition that may help traffic planners to design intersections forbicycle traffic.
