It is believed that the Southern Hemi-sphere Westerlies (SHW) play a key role in regulating climate change in the mid-to-high latitudes of the SH, thus reconstructing the SHW latitudinal positioning since the LGM has been crucial.     Sammanfattning : Nightingale Island is situated at 37°S in the central part of the South Atlantic Ocean, which is a sensitive location for variations within the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and the Southern Hemisphere Westerlies (SHW) wind belt. A peat sequence from the wetland 2nd Pond has been investigated with emphasis on the composition of the deposits, loss on ignition (LOI), total Carbon (TC), Nitrogen (N), biogenic Silica (BSi), magnetic susceptibility (MS), diatom counting and macrofossil analysis.     Sammanfattning : Fourteen somewhat overlapping 1-m cores, forming a total sequence of about 10.90 metres, were retrieved from Taniente Palet bog on Isla de los Estados, Argentina. The cores were described and correlated both visually and by measuring magnetic susceptibility and loss on ignition. Twelve samples were also taken for radiocarbon dating. LÄS MER
