Analysis, Survey, and Development Proposal for Runmarö

Sammanfattning: The thesis was created with a special aim to propose a possible urban development plan for Runmarö, one of the core islands in the Stockholm archipelago. Therefore, a historical and spatial analysis, a survey, and a proposal for further development of Runmarö were also conducted as part of this thesis. With the help of the survey, attitudes, habits, and openness to various developments among permanent residents and holiday home owners on Runmarö island could be explored. The survey consisted of five main topics tapping into Demographics, Travelling and time spending habits, Pro-environmental attitudes, Place attachment, and Attitudes towards potential urban developments. Taking the findings of the survey, the development strategy of Värmdö municipality, as well as the existing initiatives of the residents into consideration, the thesis offers a proposal for future development. The proposed development plan focuses on four main elements: providing environmental sustainability by defining protected nature areas and suggesting infrastructural improvement in water management; advocating agricultural activities for maintaining the cultural landscape; nurturing nature tourism by improving the wayfinding qualities and proposing amenities such as campsites and shelters; and improving the quality of the public realm by defining community spaces and small-scale plazas at the frequently visited nodes on Runmarö.
