Huldror och skogskarlar : En genusstudie av tidskriften Skogssport

Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för kulturantropologi och etnologi

Sammanfattning: This bachelor’s thesis purpose is to investigate how gender is constructed in the magazine “Skogssport“ during the late 1940’s and in the beginning of the 1950’s. It also deals with studying how the values of the society during the 40-ties is visible in the text. The study has been combined with interviews with former orienteers active during this period. Using the method thematic analysis five different themes has occurred: “huldra” (forest nymph) and “skogskarlar” (forest men), the ideal orienteer, the behavioural orienteer, family situation and orienteering and equal opportunities for female orienteers. These themes are put into the theoretical framework of the gender researchers Judith Butler and Yvonne Hirdman. Michel Foucault’s thoughts around power is also connected to this study. Butler’s heterosexual matrix is strongly evident in the text and Hirdman’s gender contract is also visible within the different themes. The interviews both confirms and contradicts what is written in Skogssport. Thoughts around being a behavioural orienteer occurred with some of the informants. The gender contract regarding family life was obvious with some of the male orienteers, but not with the women. Consensus around equality when it came to competitions and fellowship at the orienteering races was clear; everyone was equally welcome.Key words
