Sammanfattning: Title: What makes the social worker remain? - Work environmental factors leading to retention of personnel within the authority of children and youth Authors: Tomas Johansson & Rickard Nord Supervisor: Karl Hedman The purpose of this study is to examine the health factors that experienced social workers value in their workplaces. This is to create a clearer picture of what it is that creates a good working environment and a healthy workplace. The study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with social workers in the Swedish Agency for Children and Youth. The study is based on an abductive approach, which means a combination of inductive and deductive approaches. The study has analysed collected data based on a thematic analysis, which means that transcripts of the interviews have been analysed with the aim of establishing themes that are relevant to the study's purpose and questions. The study finds that four themes are relevant: peer support, benefits, trust-based leadership and work motivation. According to the study, these four factors are important in a workplace in contributing to a positive work environment. These themes are raised in response to the high workload experienced by social workers and these factors mitigate the stress levels otherwise associated with a high workload over a long period of time. The high workload is also briefly highlighted in relation to New Public Management and the negative aspects that follow the method. For organisations around the country, these stressors are a well-known problem, working with scarce resources, sick leave and the constant training of new staff. They undergo regular organisational changes in the hope of finding solutions to this problem. This study is a contribution to this search for solutions.
