Frihet under kontroll -En kvalitativ studie om unga vuxna mäns erfarenheter och syn på sin villkorliga frigivning

Supervisor: Lotti Rydberg The aim of the study is to examine how the government's institution Probation Service can be perceived by its clients from a power perspective. The issues we intended to answer was how clients experienced their contact with the institution and how they saw on their possibilities to influence. We did five qualitative interviews with young adult men between 25-32 years of age, who currently had or have had a parole with supervision. We got in touch with the organization KRIS (CRISIS criminals rights in society) and the institution Probation Service, to find our respondents. KRIS is an organization founded by former criminals to help people who has come out of prison, as the institution Probation Service is governmental and part of the criminal care-system in Sweden. We have analyzed the interviews to find themes, differences and similarities between the respondents answers. With the help of our theoretical concepts of power and empowerment, as well as previous research we have analysed the material. What we have come to is that the respondents did not see the institution Probation Service as an exercise of power authority. Respondents who had contact with KRIS stated that they had less help from the Probation Service than the respondents who were only in contact with the Probation Service and its officer. Another noticed difference was that the client who only had contact with the Probation Service, felt that they had greater chance to influence the plans that were made for them. Clients of KRIS felt to have less chance to influence the Probation service's efforts. Clients stated that they get more help today and can affect planning to a greater extent than the previous penalties.
