"När man lägger på hi-haten får man lära om sig": En kvalitativ studie som prövar ett nytt material inom linjärt trumspel

Sammanfattning: The inspiration to design our own teaching material came from a musical meeting where we expressed an interest in linear drumming. The ambition for the actual creation was based on the lack of a material for drummers at an intermediate level to a more advanced level in linear drumming. The material contains a clear purpose, concrete exercises, clear progression and focus on motivation and creativity. The material was then examined on the basis of the following questions: What views and opinions do drum students and drum teachers express about the material? What abilities do the informants consider to be developed based on working with the material? How does the informants describe the experience of a joyful practice session and in what way can the material contribute to that experience? How do different practice strategies affect the informants results from working with the material? The literature mainly consists of books that deal with music research, pedagogy, and music creation. The study was conducted using two qualitative methods: semi-structured interviews and participatory observations. The informants are drum teachers and students in gymnasiums and folk high schools in Sweden. The result shows that the informants perceive the material as suitable for their level of playing. In the discussion we present and discuss connections between the literature and the informants' opinions about the material and joyful practicing. It appears that the informants use practice strategies that are supported by literature. The conclusion shows that the material has had a positive impact on the informants understanding of linear drumming but that the material lacks a clear connection to the informants conception about joyful music practice. Nevertheless, the informants show that the material has given them new tools to develop specific skills in their drumming.
