Sammanfattning: Why do consumers not recycle their packaging? And what is packaging? Plastic and paper packaging have a low recycling rate compared to metal and glass packaging. According to Swedish legislation, a larger amount of household packaging should be recycled. It may also be difficult to determine what a packaging is actually made of. This study was conducted to determine whether a deposit system would be useful for consumers to contribute to sustainable development. The study developed criteria for designing a deposit system for household packaging. This was done by first interviewing different people within waste management, and then interviewing different consumers. This resulted in criteria for how consumers wished the deposit system to be designed to make it easier to use. Eight criteria were developed and addressed plastic and paper packaging. The deposit system would be based on some form of reward, be at the property boundary, spread information through a digital platform, clarify packaging with symbols to facilitate sorting, improve packaging design (to make it recyclable and only contain one material), be at the individual level, and have a high level of cleanliness on the packaging. The biggest reason for not recycle plastic and paper packaging was the packaging design, which is not recyclable and is not part of a circular material flow today. Other factors for unrecycled packaging were due to consumer ignorance and laziness.
