Sammanfattning: The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which glossaries are used as a Spanish vocabulary learning tool in Swedish schools and colleges. In addition, the theoretical and methodological knowledge that teachers have about vocabulary learning will also be investigated. The study was carried out by means of an anonymous survey in which fifty teachers who have worked as teachers for at least two years, participated. From the results obtained, we could see that the use of glossaries for vocabulary learning is almost universal among ther espondents and that most of them consider that the lists should be presented in acommunicative context and practiced through production exercises. The results of the survey also show that a considerable number, although not a majority, still use glossaries as lists of single words translated into the learners' mother tongue and without any context of use. This methodology, widespread fifty years ago, is not supportedby current research to be the most successful methodology of vocabulary learning. Finally, the results of the study have shown that a majority of the respondents seem to be aware of the importance of the communicative context and the written and oral production exercises for vocabulary learning, which are typical of more current methodological positions. However, they are not aware of the various authors who, from the end of the last century to the present day, have developed the most recognized theories regarding vocabulary learning and, more specifically, the use of word lists. There is therefore a pressing need for Spanish teachers in Sweden to fill the methodological and theoretical gap in vocabulary learning and the use of glossaries in order to develop their profession with a scientific awareness.
