Invandring – ett kulturellt eller ekonomiskt hot? Sociotropiska bedömningars effekter på attityder gentemot invandring i Sverige

Sammanfattning: The aim of this study is to investigate why individuals form certain attitudes towards immigration from a perspective of sociotropic concerns. The theory suggests that people form political attitudes based on the consequences for their country as a whole. I add the perspective that sociotropic concerns are based on the social group that is of most importance to the individual, national or not. Previous research has pointed at the centrality of economic and cultural assessments of the consequences of immigration, but these have too often been conducted in different analyses, making it difficult to estimate how much weight to put to each explanation. The explanations will be tested on Sweden using individual level data from SOM-institutet year 2015 with logistic regression. The results indicate, in line with previous research, that even though both explanations are significant at p<0,001, a larger share of variance in attitudes toward immigration is accounted for by concern about the cultural consequences of immigration than concern about the economic impact.
