Changes in musicians’ perceptions and feelings as their original compositions are altered by AI.

Sammanfattning: The development of artificial intelligence has spread into a variety of different sectors as more and more possible applications are discovered. This study will focus on the potential effects that AI tools can have on musicians. The purpose of the study is to provide helpful data that can assist future research and the development of creative AI tools. If musicians are the target audience for these technologies, having valuable insight into the experiences, thought processes, and feelings of these musicians matter when designing and marketing these tools. The related research to this study ranges from different applications of artificial intelligence, audience and usability research for creative AI development, to co-creativity between musicians and AI tools. The study is trying to answer the following three questions: “How do the feelings of a musician change towards their original composition when it has been altered by AI?”, “How does the perception of AI tools change for a musician after experiencing an alteration of their original composition generated by an AI?” and “Does the usage of AI affect their sense of ownership towards music generated from their original composition?”. These questions were approached by letting five musicians compose original music and then use an AI to alter the compositions, and finally interviewing the musicians to gather data from their experiences during the study. The results suggested that if the AI managed to preserve an intended theme or feeling of the original piece, while simultaneously providing the musician with something additional by either enhancing the original composition with its alteration or expanding their creative domain, the experience was positive and their attitude towards using these types of technologies turned more positive as well.
