  1. 1. The quest for a classical bulge - a study of kinematics, abundances, and ages using microlensed dwarf stars and Gaia

    Master-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Astrofysik; Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen

    Författare :Calum Kvernes Macpherson; [2023]
    Nyckelord :Bulge; Milky Way; Kinematics; Galpy; Dwarf Stars; Physics and Astronomy;

    Sammanfattning : Context: We present an kinematical analysis of 90 F and G type dwarf, turn-off, and subgiant stars in the Galactic bulge. These stars were observed with high-resolution spectrographs during gravitational microlensing events This allowed for their ages, abundances, and radial velocities to be ascertained while they were significantly brighter. 2. 2. Hyper-velocity stars from globular clusters hosting intermediate-mass black holes

    Kandidat-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Astrofysik; Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen

    Författare :Matilda Skantz; [2023]
    Nyckelord :Hypervelocity stars; run-away stars; stellar binary; intermediate mass black hole; globular cluster; Hills mechanism; Physics and Astronomy;

    Sammanfattning : In 1988 Hills proposed that stars can gain velocities above 500 km s−1 if they are in a stellar binary which gets disrupted by a super massive black hole (SMBH). One of the stars would get trapped in an elliptical orbit around the SMBH while the other gets ejected and obtains a relatively high velocity. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Finding stars that are likely to be from accreted satellite galaxies

    Kandidat-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Astrofysik; Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen

    Författare :Helena Cronstedt; [2023]
    Nyckelord :galaxy mergers; merger debris; velocity space; Physics and Astronomy;

    Sammanfattning : The Milky Way galaxy has through its lifetime merged with several smaller galaxies in its surroundings. Merger events like these play an important role in the formation of galaxies and are therefore of great interest to better our understanding of galaxy formation. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Searching for direct collapse black holes using the James Webb Space Telescope

    Master-uppsats, Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för fysik och astronomi

    Författare :Edison Arellano Almeida; [2022]
    Nyckelord :extragalactic astronomy;

    Sammanfattning : Recent detections of massive quasars at z > 6 has proven to be an interesting challengefor cosmology given the short time frame that these objects have to reach a certainmass via conventional methods (e.g., galaxy mergers). LÄS MER

  5. 5. Colliding Galaxies in a (Nut)Shell

    Master-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation; Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen

    Författare :Jonathan Petersson; [2022]
    Nyckelord :shell galaxies; simulations; starbursts; quenching; mergers; Physics and Astronomy;

    Sammanfattning : Galaxy interactions and mergers are natural recurring events in the current cosmological paradigm, events that often coincide with starbursts and enhanced star formation activity. To understand why that is, one can use idealised (non-cosmological) merger simulations, which provide freedom to recreate specific tidally distorted galaxies, and analysis of the time evolution and underlying physics of the star formation activity at a high spatial resolution.
