Sammanfattning: Abstract Jerfström, M. (2013). Mission overweight and obesity – how do child-care centers operate? C-thesis in Public Health. Faculty of Health and Occupational Studies. University of Gävle.   The main objective of the study was to examine how and with what methods child-welfare centers work to prevent overweight and obesity among children. Another objective was to see if the work was based on the Guidelines issued by the National Board of Health and Welfare. The methodology of the study was a descriptive design in a quantitative approach and the study group was nurses working at different child-welfare centers in a particular Swedish county. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. The results of the study showed that simple advices during individual conversations held on several occasions were the most widely used approach for prevention of overweight and obesity. The nurses did not follow the National Board of Health and Welfare Guidelines and pointed out the lack of specific knowledge in the subject. The conclusion was that there could be a need for new procedures and working methods in preventive work. This could be achieved in collaboration with other professions to supplement the lack of knowledge among the nurses.     Keywords: child-welfare centers, overweight, obesity, prevention
