Sammanfattning: The purpose of this study is to examine if there is an opportunity for children to recognize themselves in illustrations in children's literature and to see whether there are changes over time. The study is based on the grounds of discrimination in the analysis. The grounds of discrimination are sex, gender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion or other belief, disability, sexual orientation and age. The study is based on the most borrowed books that have been published during a 10-year period (2012-2022) from Karlskrona municipality's city library. This is a documentary study based on a method combination with both qualitative and quantitative methods. There is a content analysis of children's literature which is then compiled and discussed. The content analysis is based on a template that the illustrations in the children's books are coded into. The results indicate that not all 7 grounds of discrimination are represented in the children's books. Religion or other beliefs are not illustrated in the children's books that were analyzed. Even the grounds of discrimination that are represented do not offer any great variety, which means that children do not get many different opportunities to be able to recognize themselves in the illustrations in children's literature. Only 3 different ethnicities are offered in the children's books analyzed. The distribution there is uneven, 392 people with light skin, 10 people with dark skin and 2 people of Asian origin. Some changes are made visible over time, for example the ground of discrimination in accordance with ones sex, where in recent years it evens out with the number of male, female and uni characters. The possibility of being able to see cross-gender identity or expression are also increasing in recent years. Finally, the importance of offering the children a variety of books is discussed. The importance of reviewing the selected literature to create the right conditions for all children is also discussed.
