Sammanfattning: In 2015 - the year that later became associated with the refugee crisis - Sweden's reception of refugees seeking asylum was unique in relation to Scandinavian and most other european countries. According to economic predictions, influxes of immigrants could potentially harm employment oppurtunities for the already existing workers in the receiving country. On this particular issue, evidence from earlier research has been mixed. Still there seems to be some consensus about the potential negative employment- and wage-effects being larger among groups that with the immigrants share similar characteristics in regards to their age, gender, levels of education, etc. By using OLS-regressions and an IV based on an implemented (in mars 2016) dispersal policy, the aim of this study is to quantify the effect that the influx of refugees and their family members during 2010 - 2019 had on the rate of employment among foreign-born immigrants in Sweden. In line with the spatial approach, we use, within municipalities, variation in the ratio of refugees in relation to the foreign-born population as our independent variable. On low-skilled immigrants, our results indicate a significant negative employment effect of around -0,4 percentage points. For immigrants who had been living in Sweden for more than 10 years, however - we did not find any significant effects, although the IV-estimate was much more negative compared with the OLS's. With small significance (and not statistical) the effects estimated on men compared to women were larger.
